Grand Fondo 100 Tours Through Eastlake

Grand-Fondo

Last Sunday, the fourth edition of GranFondo Cannondale San Diego painted the streets of downtown Little Italy with the finest of bikes, colorful jerseys and thousands of avid cyclists about to embark on a 60 or 108 mile pursuit throughout scenic San Diego.

The ride began in the heart of downtown Little Italy with a mass of 1,400 riders starting at 7:15 AM. The official presentation featured Samuel Nehemiah of the Challenged Athletes Foundation. Samuel is a polio survivor since the age of four and has pursued an active life filled with sports. This year, Samuel is striving to be ranked top 10 in wheelchair basketball and plans to represent the USA at the Paralympic games.

Led in procession by Fiat of Kearney Mesa and the Ferrari’s of Little Italy’s own restaurateur Joseph Busalacchi, cyclists from more than 20 states and 5 countries commenced their ride on a projected sunny, 64-degree day.

The peloton included friends of presenting sponsor Cannondale, charity partner, the Challenged Athlete’s Foundation,  Franz Weber, six-time world speed skiing champion and former world record holder and Glenn Carano of Ferrari Carano Winery and Silver Legacy Hotel of Reno.

The course features a start in Little Italy with a Southern route heading Southeast towards Bonita road, followed by a scenic route along Otay Lakes, Olympic Parkway and a winding loop around Eastlake, Lower Otay Lakes Road and the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

With more than 150 volunteers on course and on-site, Star Events extends a hearty thank you for the support of these individuals, the Little Italy Association of San Diego, the Challenged Athletes Foundation, and all city and county offices who continue to support the event and recreational cycling within the San Diego community.
