The new Cancer Center at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center and Medical Office Plaza open its doors this month, bringing to the South Bay a $36 million, 45,000-sq.-ft. facility unlike any other in the region.

“The Cancer Center was designed with patients in mind,” said Pablo Velez, R.N., Ph.D., Chief

Executive Officer of Sharp Chula Vista. “With the most advanced technology available in the region and a peaceful environment with gardens, natural light and comforting touches, it truly is a place for healing.”

The Cancer Center’s hallmark technology is TrueBeam™ radiotherapy. Faster, more powerful and more accurate than any other technology currently available, TrueBeam is optimized to destroy cancer and preserve healthy or critical organs with exceptional precision and speed that shorten treatment times for patients. With TrueBeam, new treatments on even the most complex types of cancer are possible.

“Offering the TrueBeam technology puts the Cancer Center on par with the world’s leading cancer care destinations,” Velez added. “This is a tremendous investment for the South Bay community.”

Additional elements of the facility’s unique design include thoughtful touches like a private entrance for returning patients, soothing décor, and a rooftop terrace where patients can receive infusion therapy in the open air. In addition, the Cancer Center’s radiation treatment suites are the only ones in the country known to offer floor-to-ceiling windows with garden views.

The South Bay’s first choice for cancer care, Sharp Chula Vista is well known for its array of cancer support services, which include patient navigation, pet therapy, and support groups. The Cancer Center’s larger space will allow for the hospital’s comprehensive cancer services to be offered all under one roof. The first patients will be treated in the Cancer Center in July.

Funding for the Cancer Center came from a $15.5 million commitment from Sharp HealthCare, with the Sharp HealthCare Foundation dedicated to raising $3.4 million in philanthropic support. A partnership with the facility’s builder, Makena Medical Buildings Chula Vista, LLC, provided the remaining financial support.

Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center is a 343-bed hospital with the largest array of health care services in San Diego’s South Bay. Home to the region’s most comprehensive cardiac care program, Sharp Chula Vista also specializes in cancer treatment and bloodless medicine.

Its most popular product is Beyond Tangy Tangerine, a citrus-flavored drink mix packed with vitamins, minerals and amino acids. A newer product is a “functional gourmet coffee” enhanced with added nutrients. It also sells the ThighMaster Toning System and other products by Suzanne Somers.

The 15-year-old company is growing rapidly. It had $40 million in sales last year, nearly double the previous year’s sales. Its 58,000-square-foot headquarters and distribution center in Chula Vista ships out enough packages each day to fill a semi truck. Through a recent merger with a publicly traded company, it’s on track to do $67 million in sales this year, Wallach said.
Youngevity’s products include body creams and cleansers.

The company contracts with mostly U.S. producers to make its products with ingredients from around the world. Some of the suppliers are trade secrets, but one of its primary producers is the giant Pharmachem Laboratories in New Jersey.
Wallach’s goal is ambitious. He wants Youngevity to be among the top direct-sales companies in the world. This year, he expects the company to break the Top 100 under the umbrella of newly formed AL International, he said.

Both Herbalife and Youngevity use multilevel marketing, a business strategy that turns customers into a sales force. The products are sold through a network of distributors, such as moms and chiropractors, who earn additional income by recruiting other distributors. Some liken this system to a pyramid scheme, but it is a $125 billion industry dominated by reputable companies such as Mary Kay, Amway and Avon. (One of the board members of Youngevity is the former chairman of Mary Kay.)

“I have always been blessed with a very high level of energy. I had taken very good care of myself in regards to eating properly and exercising,” Joan Wyllie, Founder of Nine Girls Ask? For A Cure For Ovarian Cancer. During October of 2007, Wyllie began experiencing a series of unusual symptoms including:

Wyllie was misdiagnosed and mistreated by nine physicians over a six month period. She then took the role of a health advocate and insisted on laparoscopic surgery. On February 29, 2008 Wyllie received the shocking diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer Stage 4. She underwent seven hours of intensive surgery, six months of horrific chemotherapy and subsequent hospitalizations. Wyllie proudly states she is now dancing with NED (no evidence of disease).

Due to the lack of assistance for Ovarian Cancer patients, Wyllie decided there was an enormous need for an organization to raise funds for a cure for women. Wyllie formed Nine Girls Ask? For A Cure For Ovarian Cancer. This organization also offers “one-on-one” love and support, to include education and guidance through the journey of Ovarian Cancer to all women afflicted by this disease.

Approximately 350 women die each week from this cancer and one in every 70 women will be affected in their lifetime. This cancer affects woman of all ages and ethnicities and the sad thing is that most women do not even know they have it until it is too late.

It’s cold and flu season, so no big surprise that I am seeing lots of coughs, colds, sore throats and fevers. What is surprising though is all of the infants and children with anemia. Most cases of anemia in children are a result of iron deficiency and that’s exactly what I am seeing. In fact, iron deficiency is one of the most common yet undetected problems in children. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends screening for anemia at the 9-month, 2-year, and 5-year exams. Because of how common anemia seems to be, I not only follow these guidelines, but I check at 9 months, and every well-child exam from 2 years and up.

It’s surprising to me how many cases of iron deficiency I diagnose. Surprising enough that it compelled me to write about it! The good news…. it’s pretty easy to fix. I recommend starting with a vitamin with iron and dietary changes. Gummy vitamins do not contain iron, so make sure you pick out a liquid or chewable vitamin. The vitamins are the easy half of the fix; the diet can be a little trickier. There are lots of foods fortified with iron, which are helpful, but the body actually absorbs and utilizes iron best from the natural source. Red meat, eggs, green leafy vegetables, dried fruit (like prunes and raisins), soy products and beans are the best sources. In addition, foods rich in vitamin C, like citrus, help the body absorb iron. Dairy and other foods high in calcium can actually bind iron, so make sure not to overdo it.

A typical case of iron-deficiency anemia is a toddler who fills up on milk and dairy, with an otherwise very limited diet. Remember, milk does the body good, but only in moderation. On the bright side, once you limit your child’s dairy intake, they actually eat better! Not filling up their stomachs with milk leaves lots of room to be hungry.

Why is iron deficiency so important to fix? Because iron is very important for growth and cognitive functions. Symptoms of anemia come on gradually, so initially you may not even notice. However, it can eventually lead to generalized weakness, irritability, easy fatigability, headaches, poor feeding, anorexia, poor weight gain, and pica (which is a craving to eat non-food things).

If your child is picky, as many are, you may need to be a bit creative and sneaky. It may be difficult at first, but remember that persistence pays off. Once corrected you will find that your child is happier, more energetic, and can even fight off infections better.

Some food for thought…. Iron-deficiency anemia does not discriminate. It is seen most commonly in toddlers because of their picky and limited diet; however, any picky eater at any age is at risk for anemia. Finally, adolescent girls are also at risk for anemia and can definitely benefit from a multi-vitamin with iron.  Have your kids been tested for anemia recently?

It is estimated that 70 percent of smokers want to quit smoking.

However, some scientifically-proven quit smoking programs that have gotten the nod of many health professionals may be effective but bring side-effects.

For this reason, many alternative therapies are out to help many individuals in their desire to be nicotine-free. These alternative methods are considered by many as safe and effective way of quitting smoking.

Acupuncture
Medical studies show that acupuncture may increase the levels of endorphins in the body. Endorphins are opiate-like substances in the body that are known elevate the mood and bring moments of relaxation. These factors may lower the cravings for that stick or pack of cigarette. Many health professionals recommend at least four sessions of acupuncture during the first month of quitting.

Herbal remedies
There are no herbs that contain nicotine. However, there are herbs like chamomile that has a calming effect that may help one’s transition to life as a non-smoker. The calming effect of this herb may help one cope with stressful situations that may lead one to light a cigarette. However, individuals who want to try this herb should seek the approval of a health professional because it might produce an allergic reaction and interact with other drugs.

Hypnosis
Smokers have natural cigarette triggers. Factors like driving, eating, watching TV, and stress may entice individuals to smoke. With subconscious reminders about the positive effects of quitting smoking, hypnosis may help reduce nicotine cravings and improve one’s ability to quit smoking. In addition to these health benefits hypnosis therapy uses no drugs and can be completed completely and there is no long-term cause.

Exercise and nutrition
Regular exercise may improve blood flow and help individuals deal with tensions and stress in life without cigarettes. Studies show that moderate exercise like 30 minutes of jogging and brisk walking may bring many health benefits. Exercise and other physical activities may also promote the production of endorphins. In addition to exercise, eating regular meals and cutting down fat in one’s diet may aid in the management of blood sugar changes associated in quitting smoking.

Massage
Having a massage may promote better moods and less anxiety which may lead to fewer and less nicotine cravings. A University of Miami Touch Research Institute suggested that a two-minute hand or ear massage may curb nicotine cravings and, therefore, cut daily cigarette intake.

There are many scientifically proven quit smoking products and alternative methods that are available. These products, however, cannot do all the work, the best and effective to quit smoking involves determination, discipline, and commitment to stop the habit permanently. Using these products and engaging in alternative methods can help smokers cut the habit by making them more comfortable and complacent to adjust to life without cigarettes. However, before taking over-the-counter or herbal products and engaging in many alternative methods to quit smoking, individuals are advised to seek the approval health professionals. They may explain various alternative methods and clarify side effects and drug interactions that may take place while under medication. With the right tools and attitude, quitting smoking can be easier than others think.

Chiropractics is a medical system based on the theory that disease and disorders are caused by misaligned bones, especially in the spine, that obstructs proper nerve functions.  Chiropractors manually manipulate the joints of the body and realign the spinal column.

Chiropractors are people who diagnose and treat disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems.  The philosophy of chiropractic medicine believes that skeletal imbalance and joint malfunction, particularly in the area of the spine, can cause pain and other problems.  Chiropractors rely on palpitation, pressure, and manual manipulation of the joints and muscles to cure these problems.

Chiropractors use the term subluxation to depict the altered position of the vertebra and subsequent functional loss, thus determines the location for the manipulative treatment.

Chiropractors often use chiropractic kinesiology to treat structural imbalances and muscle and joint problems.  Chiropractic kinesiology is a specific form of diagnosis using functional neurological muscle testing (FNMT) as a primary feedback mechanism to help determine the cause of an individual’s chief complaint and to help evaluate our structural, nutritional and mental aspects of health.

Chiropractic treatment is suitable for everyone, including newborn babies, the elderly, pregnant women, and sports enthusiasts.  Your chiropractor will help you to maintain your health, and keep your body aligned as it should, and by offering exercise and lifestyle advice for you to follow in the future.

Not all insurance covers chiropractic care.  You will need to check with your health care provider.  Most chiropractic offices will call and check on your coverage, but it is best to call your health provider prior to your visit.

Chiropractic treatment can be ongoing.  You may achieve a degree of comfort after your treatments, but misalignment of joints can sometimes be reoccurring.
