It’s cold and flu season, so no big surprise that I am seeing lots of coughs, colds, sore throats and fevers. What is surprising though is all of the infants and children with anemia. Most cases of anemia in children are a result of iron deficiency and that’s exactly what I am seeing. In fact, iron deficiency is one of the most common yet undetected problems in children. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends screening for anemia at the 9-month, 2-year, and 5-year exams. Because of how common anemia seems to be, I not only follow these guidelines, but I check at 9 months, and every well-child exam from 2 years and up.

It’s surprising to me how many cases of iron deficiency I diagnose. Surprising enough that it compelled me to write about it! The good news…. it’s pretty easy to fix. I recommend starting with a vitamin with iron and dietary changes. Gummy vitamins do not contain iron, so make sure you pick out a liquid or chewable vitamin. The vitamins are the easy half of the fix; the diet can be a little trickier. There are lots of foods fortified with iron, which are helpful, but the body actually absorbs and utilizes iron best from the natural source. Red meat, eggs, green leafy vegetables, dried fruit (like prunes and raisins), soy products and beans are the best sources. In addition, foods rich in vitamin C, like citrus, help the body absorb iron. Dairy and other foods high in calcium can actually bind iron, so make sure not to overdo it.

A typical case of iron-deficiency anemia is a toddler who fills up on milk and dairy, with an otherwise very limited diet. Remember, milk does the body good, but only in moderation. On the bright side, once you limit your child’s dairy intake, they actually eat better! Not filling up their stomachs with milk leaves lots of room to be hungry.

Why is iron deficiency so important to fix? Because iron is very important for growth and cognitive functions. Symptoms of anemia come on gradually, so initially you may not even notice. However, it can eventually lead to generalized weakness, irritability, easy fatigability, headaches, poor feeding, anorexia, poor weight gain, and pica (which is a craving to eat non-food things).

If your child is picky, as many are, you may need to be a bit creative and sneaky. It may be difficult at first, but remember that persistence pays off. Once corrected you will find that your child is happier, more energetic, and can even fight off infections better.

Some food for thought…. Iron-deficiency anemia does not discriminate. It is seen most commonly in toddlers because of their picky and limited diet; however, any picky eater at any age is at risk for anemia. Finally, adolescent girls are also at risk for anemia and can definitely benefit from a multi-vitamin with iron. Have your kids been tested for anemia recently?

It is estimated that 70 percent of smokers want to quit smoking.

However, some scientifically-proven quit smoking programs that have gotten the nod of many health professionals may be effective but bring side-effects.

For this reason, many alternative therapies are out to help many individuals in their desire to be nicotine-free. These alternative methods are considered by many as safe and effective way of quitting smoking.

Acupuncture
Medical studies show that acupuncture may increase the levels of endorphins in the body. Endorphins are opiate-like substances in the body that are known elevate the mood and bring moments of relaxation. These factors may lower the cravings for that stick or pack of cigarette. Many health professionals recommend at least four sessions of acupuncture during the first month of quitting.

Herbal remedies
There are no herbs that contain nicotine. However, there are herbs like chamomile that has a calming effect that may help one’s transition to life as a non-smoker. The calming effect of this herb may help one cope with stressful situations that may lead one to light a cigarette. However, individuals who want to try this herb should seek the approval of a health professional because it might produce an allergic reaction and interact with other drugs.

Hypnosis
Smokers have natural cigarette triggers. Factors like driving, eating, watching TV, and stress may entice individuals to smoke. With subconscious reminders about the positive effects of quitting smoking, hypnosis may help reduce nicotine cravings and improve one’s ability to quit smoking. In addition to these health benefits hypnosis therapy uses no drugs and can be completed completely and there is no long-term cause.

Exercise and nutrition
Regular exercise may improve blood flow and help individuals deal with tensions and stress in life without cigarettes. Studies show that moderate exercise like 30 minutes of jogging and brisk walking may bring many health benefits. Exercise and other physical activities may also promote the production of endorphins. In addition to exercise, eating regular meals and cutting down fat in one’s diet may aid in the management of blood sugar changes associated in quitting smoking.

Massage
Having a massage may promote better moods and less anxiety which may lead to fewer and less nicotine cravings. A University of Miami Touch Research Institute suggested that a two-minute hand or ear massage may curb nicotine cravings and, therefore, cut daily cigarette intake.

There are many scientifically proven quit smoking products and alternative methods that are available. These products, however, cannot do all the work, the best and effective to quit smoking involves determination, discipline, and commitment to stop the habit permanently. Using these products and engaging in alternative methods can help smokers cut the habit by making them more comfortable and complacent to adjust to life without cigarettes. However, before taking over-the-counter or herbal products and engaging in many alternative methods to quit smoking, individuals are advised to seek the approval health professionals. They may explain various alternative methods and clarify side effects and drug interactions that may take place while under medication. With the right tools and attitude, quitting smoking can be easier than others think.

Chiropractics is a medical system based on the theory that disease and disorders are caused by misaligned bones, especially in the spine, that obstructs proper nerve functions. Chiropractors manually manipulate the joints of the body and realign the spinal column.

Chiropractors are people who diagnose and treat disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. The philosophy of chiropractic medicine believes that skeletal imbalance and joint malfunction, particularly in the area of the spine, can cause pain and other problems. Chiropractors rely on palpitation, pressure, and manual manipulation of the joints and muscles to cure these problems.

Chiropractors use the term subluxation to depict the altered position of the vertebra and subsequent functional loss, thus determines the location for the manipulative treatment.

Chiropractors often use chiropractic kinesiology to treat structural imbalances and muscle and joint problems. Chiropractic kinesiology is a specific form of diagnosis using functional neurological muscle testing (FNMT) as a primary feedback mechanism to help determine the cause of an individual’s chief complaint and to help evaluate our structural, nutritional and mental aspects of health.

Chiropractic treatment is suitable for everyone, including newborn babies, the elderly, pregnant women, and sports enthusiasts. Your chiropractor will help you to maintain your health, and keep your body aligned as it should, and by offering exercise and lifestyle advice for you to follow in the future.

Not all insurance covers chiropractic care. You will need to check with your health care provider. Most chiropractic offices will call and check on your coverage, but it is best to call your health provider prior to your visit.

Chiropractic treatment can be ongoing. You may achieve a degree of comfort after your treatments, but misalignment of joints can sometimes be reoccurring.

Teaming up with independent film company, Breadtruck Films, the pediatric dentistry and orthodontics practice will feature the 3D mini-film, this June, prior to a San Diego private screening of “Cars 2”

Move over Superman and Batman, there’s a new team of super heroes in San Diego and they aren’t sugar-coating anything. The Super Dentists, San Diego’s pediatric and orthodontic specialists servicing Oceanside, EastLake, Chula Vista and surrounding communities, have teamed up with San Diego’s Breadtruck Films to create “The Super Dentists – Strike Back;” the first-ever 3D movie put out by a pediatric dentist and orthodontist, as well as an independent film company.

“After the creation of our first kid adventure movie back in 2004, it was clear to see how much kids and parents enjoyed watching the film over and over again,” announced Dr. Kami Hoss, Orthodontist at The Super Dentists. “With an equal amount of focus on education and entertainment, the film was a hit. This time, we wanted to take it up a notch — or three.”

In the movie, the evil villain, Cavitar, and his sidekick, Molar, capture dentists all over San Diego County and hold them captive in their “lair” at the candy store. The Super Dentists pretend to get captured, in order to save the others, but lose their super powers after being sprayed with candy. It is then up to The Super Kids™ to find out which super powers each of them possess, so that they can team up to help save The Super Dentists.

The cast members for the action film were sought out from John Robert Powers Modeling Agency, Tiny Entertainment, DBA Talent, Elegant Talent and local talent recruited through the Super Dentists’ team.

“By creating a movie that is in 3D we hope to capture the attention of children and their parents in a way that will make them feel as though they too are helping The Super Dentists capture the evil Cavitar and Molar as they try to take over the world with sugar,” said Dr. Nazli Keri, Pediatric Dentist at The Super Dentists. “Ideally, our goal is that this mentality will reside with them in their everyday lives.”

Production is currently underway with San Diego’s Breadtruck Films (www.BreadtruckFilms.com): an independent production company that writes, directs and produces independent films and documentaries.

“The Super Dentists – Strike Back has a release date of June; in time to premier prior to the private showing of “Cars 2.”

“The goal, as is the case with everything we do, is to help children obtain healthy smiles so that they can have a positive outlook about themselves, increase their self-esteems, and of course, have one super smile,” said Dr. Hoss. “We want to use this 3D movie to help educate children about the ‘evil sugar’ and what they can do to fight cavities and crooked teeth.”

ET: How long have you been in the San Diego’s South Bay area?
5 Years. We started in Bonita and moved to Otay Ranch Village in June, 2010.

ET: What do you like most about San Diego’s South Bay?
Great Weather, Great People, Great Beaches, Great Food, Great Quality of Living.

ET: Tell our readers about what you do.
At the South Coast Spine Center, we specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic and severe low back pain and neck pain. Our goal is to detect the underlying root cause(s) of each patient’s pain by taking a thorough health history and performing a complete orthopedic/neurological examination. We will then order updated diagnostic studies which may include MRI’s, CT Scans, Ultrasound, EMG’s or NCV’s, depending on the specific needs of the patient. Based upon the examination findings, our spine specialists will design a comprehensive “evidence based” treatment program to completely correct the true root cause(s) of pain. We also include recommendations for lifestyle changes that usually include dietary and exercise adjustments to help our patients attain optimal, long lasting health and pain free living.

ET: What makes your service different?
Advanced Medical Technology Fused With Understanding, Knowledge, Skill and Compassion. We emphasize the absolute importance of making the correct diagnosis before recommending any form of treatment. Patients often arrive at our offices without any diagnostic imaging studies or any type of definitive diagnosis. Therefore, our first step is to establish the correct diagnosis through complete examination procedures that often include advanced diagnostic imaging, ie. MRI, and EMG (Surface Eletromyography). Once the correct diagnosis has been made, a custom designed treatment program is recommended to ensure a safe, comfortable and speedy recovery.

Our facility is equipped with a wide array of advanced physical medicine modalities enabling us to provide a comprehensive approach to the nonsurgical treatment of severe lower back and neck pain. We are also networked with some of the top orthopedic, neurological, and regenerative medicine doctors in San Diego, as well as nationally, and internationally. This enables us to recommend and incorporate additional medical procedures into our treatment program with confidence and assurance that they are delivered with the highest level of integrity and care.

The wide array of physical medicine procedures offered in a modern and aesthetically pleasing environment here at the South Coast Spine Center also distinguishes our facility as unique in all of San Diego. In addition to our 4 DRX9000 systems, we also provide nonsurgical “healing laser” therapy, advanced “target-core-focused” physical rehabilitation with our Power-Plate Pro 5 Acceleration Training, SciFit Pro2 Cardio Fitness, and LifeCircuit Core Trainers. We also offer computerized hydro-massage therapy with the AquaMed 2 Dry Hydrotherapy Bed for soothing, relaxing and therapeutic whole body hydro-massage, and evidence based nutriceutical recommendations for natural and healthy alternative medicine.

ET: What causes neck and low back pain?
Neck and low back pain can be caused by a number of factors ranging from traumatic injuries to the muscles, ligaments, tendons, joints, bones, discs and nerves, to the natural degenerative effects of aging and gravity. The spinal cord is protected by the vertebrae, which are made of bone. Between each vertebra are liquid filled discs with a durable, yet flexible outer layer of cartilage. These discs function as protective cushions or “shock absorbers” to protect the vertebra, spinal cord and spinal nerves. Many of the problems that cause back pain are the result of herniation and degeneration of the intervertebral disc(s). Degeneration is due to the process of wear and tear through repetitive trauma or severe trauma that causes deterioration or degenerative changes of the disc. Herniations, protrusions, bulges and extrusions of the disc occur when the inner liquid substance known as the nucleus pulposis pushes outward. This creates a painful distortion and thinning of the disc, resulting in severe pain from the damaged disc itself, and often associated nerve pain or neurological deficit (numbness, weakness, loss of balance) from direct pressure against the spinal cord or adjacent spinal nerve. A thorough examination by a qualified and experienced health care professional is the only way to determine the precise cause of pain.

ET: Are there any side effects to the treatment?
Most patients do not experience any side effects. However, some patients on rare occasions may experience temporary soreness, or occasionally, mild muscle spasms following their decompression therapy session.

ET: Do your treatment methods work?
Most patients report a reduction in pain after the first few sessions. Typically, significant improvement is obtained during the second week of treatment. The rate of recovery is usually dependent upon the severity of the condition, and the age and health of the patient, and the patient’s compliance to the doctor’s recommendations and treatment protocol. Recent medical studies from prominent physicians at the Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, and Standford University have demonstrated consistently high success rates with the DRX9000.

Log onto: www.southcoastspine.com to read about the successful recoveries experienced by patients at the South Coast Spine Center.

ET: Can our readers use their insurance for these treatment plans?
Most insurance providers cover most of the procedures offered at our center. However, insurance coverage varies with each insurance policy. A complimentary benefits check is provided upon request. We also offer our patients the option of various patient financing plans that range from “zero down, zero interest” with affordable monthly payments for up to 2 years, to conventional financing of up to 5 years with monthly payments to fit your budget. This option also makes our care extremely affordable and “one of the best health care decisions” that can be made.

Our initial consultation is free, so there is really no risk for our patients.

ET: Are you setup with social media?
YES.

Children’s Physicians Medical Group (CPMG) will be hosting a meet and greet and a night of fun for kids and parents at the EastLake Tavern + Bowl at 881 Showroom Place in Chula Vista, CA from 4 to 8 pm on Thursday, February 24th.

There will be bowling, pizza, salad, and drinks, courtesy of CPMG, for meet and greet attendees.

While at the event, parents will have the opportunity to meet pediatrician Dr. Abraham Broudy, a CPMG physician, and his staff, who maintain an office nearby in EastLake.

As a long time resident and native of Chula Vista and San Diego, Dr. Broudy grew up in the community he now serves. He graduated from Chula Vista High School and twice from the University of San Diego, once for undergraduate studies and again for medical school. He describes his Chula Vista pediatric office as much more than a place of business, and encourages a family and community atmosphere among his staff and patients. With such a long history in the local area, Dr. Broudy is specially equipped to handle the unique concerns of area pediatric parents.

The EastLake Tavern + Bowl meet and greet with Dr. Broudy’s office and other CPMG staff is one in a series of events to connect area parents and children with the wonderful resources CPMG has to offer. What makes CPMG different from other physician groups is that children’s health is their only focus.

Community awareness of CPMG has grown in recent months thanks to a vigorous social media campaign sponsored by the organization. CPMG utilizes popular social networking sites like Facebook and YouTube to deliver a broad range of children’s health information to anyone with an Internet connection or capable mobile device. This meet and greet is an opportunity for some of CPMG’s virtual fans and followers to meet one another in a safe and fun environment.

Parents or guardians who are looking for a pediatrician in their area, or recently had a change in health plans, are welcome to attend this family event and have their questions answered.

CPMG has over 140 affiliated pediatricians and over 150 pediatric specialists in 27 specialties located throughout San Diego and Southern Riverside Counties. Along with the abundance of information available to parents on CPMG’s website http://www.cpmgsandiego.com , CPMG can also refer parents to trusted pediatric specialists affiliated with Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego.

The meet and greet planned for Thursday, February 24th, is CPMG’s opportunity to interact with parents and kids in a fun and relaxed environment.
