He brought the “American Idol” judges to their feet, but Joshua Ledet couldn’t win over fans and was sent home from the top-rated TV talent show on Thursday, leaving Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips to battle for the crown on next week’s finale.

The elimination of Ledet – through audience voting and not by the judges – sets up a final showdown between Sanchez and Phillips to determine who will be named the next “American Idol,” a distinction that has belonged to hitmakers such as Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, among others.

Sanchez has impressed the judges from the beginning of the current season with her technical mastery of music, despite being the youngest contestant at age 16. Singer-songwriter Phillips has won plaudits for bringing his own distinctive style of guitar playing music to other artists’ songs.

The finale will consist of a two-hour performance episode on Tuesday, May 22, followed by a results episode on Wednesday, May 23. The winner will receive a recording contract.

Ledet was gracious in defeat. He closed the singing contest Thursday with his rendition of “It’s a Man’s World,” replicating one of his most popular performances of the season.

On Sunday, May 6, 2012 the 2nd Annual Miss Eastlake and Miss South Bay Scholarship Pageants were held at Eastlake High School.

Over 40 young women ages 10-24 years of age vied for the titles and the Educational Scholarships.

Denise Jenkins, of National City and Melissa Floyd, of Jamul took top honors and each received a $500 Educational Scholarship.

Other 2012 titleholders included:
Teens:  Chrissy Rhamy, Carol Krueger, Jr. Teens:  Elan Studebaker and Amanda Fink,

Pre-Teens:  Gianni Petties-Wilson and Cheryl Krueger and Junior titleholder is:  Gloria Hinds.

The Scholarship Pageant was sponsored by the Council for Youth Empowerment (CYE) a 501 c 3 non-profit organization.

Each of the new titleholders have earned their spot for the Miss California State Finals Pageant, which will also be held at Eastlake High School, October 20 & 21, 2012 where over $6,000 in cash scholarships and awards will be offered, when young women from throughout the State come together to compete.

Chula Vista in California has long been seen as a quiet , suburban town compared to its more famous neighbor, San Diego.

Then the Jessica Sanchez phenomenon happened.

Chula Vista’s hometown girl came home Saturday to the kind of motorcade and welcome once associated with astronauts and sports champions.

That’s how big American Idol has become around the world, especially to the proud places  its finalists call home.

Chula Vista will be treated to a Jessica Sanchez homecoming production for the show, and pretty soon the world will know where it is.

One wonders what will ensue if Jessica Sanchez, the 16-year-old Filipino-Mexican-American with the exquisite voice, actually wins the competition.

Spending on construction of new residential housing and improvements to existing homes is at a three-year high, a trend that may boost sales at Home Depot Inc. (HD) and Lowe’s Cos. (LOW)

Private-residential fixed investment, which includes major replacements such as new roofs and improvements like finishing a basement, rose 9.1 percent from a year earlier to an annualized $360.7 billion for the three months ended March 31. This marks the fourth consecutive quarter of nominal increases and was the fastest pace of yearly growth since 2006, Bureau of Economic Analysis data show.

Recently City of Chula Vista officials received notification that the Chula Vista Police Department is the highest ranked police station in the United States, according to a survey conducted by the Vera Institute of Justice in New York.

The results were determined through an independent study conducted in November 2011 by Altus Global Alliance and the Vera Institute of Justice.

Between October 31-November 6, 2012, 4755 people visited 1044 police stations in 20 countries, including 21 in the United States, in order to assess the quality of services provided by police.

Rankings were based on (1) community orientation, (2) physical condition of the stations, (3) equal treatment of the public, (4) transparency and accountability, and, (5) detention conditions. The visits consisted of police station tours given to community groups and informal conversations with officers and staff.

The Chula Vista Police Station survey was conducted on November 3, 2011 and the department was rated as ‘More than Adequate’ in every category (ranking scale from 1-100):

Community Orientation: 95
Physical Conditions: 100
Equal Treatment: 100
Transparency and Accountability: 96.25
Detention Conditions: 97.5
Total Rating: 97.75

This is a great honor for the men and women of the Chula Vista Police Department and further illustrates the agency’s commitment to providing quality service to the Chula Vista community.

The Arc of San Diego’s Starlight Center is hosting its annual SpringFest Barbeque on Friday, May 18, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at 1280 Nolan Avenue in Chula Vista.

All proceeds benefit the Starlight Center’s Capital Campaign.  The campaign raises much needed funds for the revitalization of the Starlight Center.  Each SpringFest fundraising event brings the center one step closer to making the Starlight Center a better, more accessible place to serve people with disabilities.

The event includes traditional barbeque food, music, dancing, a silent auction, craft & floral booths, and raffle drawings for $7 per person.  The Starlight performers are also putting on a groovy 70s disco themed show that you don’t want to miss!

On May 8, 2012, the Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners and the Chula Vista City Council unanimously approved the financing agreement for the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan (CVBMP).  Following a decade-long community participation and planning process, the actions taken by both governing bodies are the first steps in implementing a plan designed to transform 556 acres of Chula Vista’s underused industrial bayfront landscape into a thriving residential and resort destination on San Diego Bay.

The terms of the financing agreement reinforce the feasibility of this important project, said Port of San Diego Commissioner Ann Moore. The unanimous votes underscore the Port of San Diego and City of Chula Vista’s alignment and focus on our end goal a world-class bayfront.

The financing agreement formalizes the ongoing partnership between the Port and City, and identifies revenues necessary for infrastructure improvements that will provide public access to Chula Vista?s waterfront, and protect key habitat areas. Following approval of the CVBMP by the California Coastal Commission, the Port and the City will collaborate on the preparation of an updated market study, which will be used to create a future Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to select a developer for the project.

The agreement by the Port and the City of Chula Vista is another milestone in what has been a deliberate and thoughtful process to establish a sustainable plan for our bayfront, which is in great need of improvement, said Chula Vista Mayor Cheryl Cox. The goal has been to balance economic development with environmental preservation, and now we have taken another significant step.
The CVBMP is expected to create and sustain thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in investment and revenues for the South Bay region and it will provide a much-needed economic benefit to the businesses located on the two existing yacht marinas. In the project?s first 20 years, the plan should generate approximately $1.3 billion for the regional economy, including more than $11.5 million in annual tax revenues. It also will create more than 2,200 permanent jobs, nearly 7,000 construction jobs and numerous indirect jobs.

Approximately 230 acres (more than 40 percent) of the project?s total acreage is dedicated to parks, open space and habitat restoration/preservation; with 130 acres identified for new publicly accessible parks and open space. These areas will include promenades, bike trails and other public access areas linking the entire bayfront. A 46-acre Signature Park, also is a major element of the plan.

The financing agreement announcement follows the recent news that Dynegy South Bay, Inc. selected a contractor to demolish the above-ground structures of the non-operating South Bay Power Plant, which is currently located on Port of San Diego tidelands and located inside the boundaries of the CVBMP site. Additionally, during the closed session portion of the Board of Port Commissioner’s meeting on May 8, the Board directed staff to negotiate an amendment to the Marine Group Boat Works, LLC (Marine Group) lease, provided that the amendment to the lease is brought back to the Board for approval by its July 12, 2012 meeting.

About the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan
At 556 acres, the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan (CVBMP) will transform Chula Vista’?s underused industrial bayfront landscape into a thriving residential and world-class waterfront resort destination. The Plan will establish thousands of new jobs, create new public parks, protect natural coastal resources, provide conference and visitor-serving amenities and build an important asset for the San Diego region, the South Bay, Chula Vista residents and coastal visitors. The CVBMP is the result of a decade-long joint planning effort by a broad coalition of stakeholders, the Port of San Diego, the City of Chula Vista and Pacifica Companies. The Plan represents the last significant development opportunity in Southern California and is anticipated to be considered by the California Coastal Commission in summer 2012.

The Port of San Diego is the fourth largest of the 11 ports in California. It was created by the state legislature in 1962 and spans five Port cities Chula Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach, National City and San Diego. The port oversees two maritime cargo terminals, two cruise ship terminals, 17 public parks, the Harbor Police Department and the leases of more than 600 tenant and sub tenant businesses around San Diego Bay. There was a lot to celebrate at the Chula Vista Police Department headquarters on Fourth Avenue last Thursday. The department hosted its 20th annual Awards & Recognition Ceremony, honoring exceptional service by sworn officers and members of the community.

One honoree was Vanessa Stewart, a security officer for Otay Ranch Town Center who was working last year during an Apple Store robbery in which one suspect was killed. Stewart tracked the incident via surveillance cameras to help police officers apprehend two more suspects.
