On Sunday, May 6, 2012 the 2nd Annual Miss Eastlake and Miss South Bay Scholarship Pageants were held at Eastlake High School.

Over 40 young women ages 10-24 years of age vied for the titles and the Educational Scholarships.

Denise Jenkins, of National City and Melissa Floyd, of Jamul took top honors and each received a $500 Educational Scholarship.

Other 2012 titleholders included:
Teens:  Chrissy Rhamy, Carol Krueger, Jr. Teens:  Elan Studebaker and Amanda Fink,

Pre-Teens:  Gianni Petties-Wilson and Cheryl Krueger and Junior titleholder is:  Gloria Hinds.

The Scholarship Pageant was sponsored by the Council for Youth Empowerment (CYE) a 501 c 3 non-profit organization.

Each of the new titleholders have earned their spot for the Miss California State Finals Pageant, which will also be held at Eastlake High School, October 20 & 21, 2012 where over $6,000 in cash scholarships and awards will be offered, when young women from throughout the State come together to compete.

Early bird registration ends May 14 to walk, stroll or run at the U.S. Olympic Training Center on Saturday, May 19 for the Chula Vista Community 5K Fun Run/Walk!

The fun run/walk will be held on the center’s inspirational grounds where participants have the opportunity to run along side Olympians through the exclusive Olympic Village — all to benefit a great cause! The U.S. Olympic Training Center, Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center and other sponsors have joined efforts and are partnering in the event to benefit four local Chula Vista charity organizations: Friends of the Chula Vista Nature Center, Friends of Chula Vista Library, Friends of Chula Vista Park and Recreation and H.E.A.R.T. for the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility.

Last Saturday, for the 16th year in a row, cyclists met at the Otay Ranch Town Center to participate in one of Eastlake’s biggest events, Cycle Eastlake 2012.

The charity event, aimed at supporting and raising money for local schools had over 100 more riders than last year and was a complete success.

The race comprised of 3 different courses and the first set of riders left at 7:30 for the 100k course. The second set of riders departed at 8am for the 25 mile Marty Garcia Memorial Ride and the last set of riders left at 8:30am for the 18 mile Mountain Bike & Poker Ride.

On behalf of our community, thank you to the volunteers and athletes who participated in our great event.

The 100K Cycle
Experienced cyclists and skaters are challenged with scenic views of the Eastlake area and neighboring hills to the east. Riding over the bridge on Hwy 125 in both directions, viewing the expanse of the countryside to the east and west of the bridge, looping past Southwestern college, the Olympic Training Center and out past Otay Lakes to the intense 7 mile climb up beautiful Honey Springs Rd.

25 Mile Cycle
Follows the 100K route before curving away from the steep incline in favor of long, slow hills and smooth, flat roads to even things out.

18 Mile Mountain Bike & Poker Ride
This challenging course by the Olympic Training Center is not for the faint of heart. At five points along the course, cycling card sharks will have an opportunity to collect their aces, kings and queens to see who will cash in with the best hand at the finish line. A sixth, bonus card will be handed out at the end of the race.

The Eastlake Educational Foundation (EEF) was established in 1995 with the mission of raising funds to support public schools within the community of Eastlake. All of the money raised from events like this goes back into the schools. The EEF, over its 16 years existence, have donated over $1.5 million dollars to schools to help purchase new technology for the students. All of the board members are volunteers as well as the staff needed to run fund raising events like this.

Floaties Swim School, a year-round indoor swimming school, is opening for swimming lessons on Monday, April 23, at its new swimming facility located at 851 Showroom Place, Suite 102, Chula Vista, California, 91914. The swimming complex also combines a playroom and party room for private events. The public is invited to tour the approximately 6000 square foot facility at an Open House taking place April 19 and 20th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, April 21, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Floaties in Eastlake is the second swimming school founded by San Diego County residents, Mike and Karyn Morrill, who opened Floaties in Poway in 2006.

Infant Aquatics is available for infants 3 months and up, with parental participation. Core classes are for children 12 months and older, and focus on developing confidence in and around the water. Pre-Strokes classes and Strokes Classes help children begin and develop techniques for learning the four major swim strokes. Classes range in price from a series of 6 lessons for $126 to a series of 12 lessons for $210 (not including a one-time registration fee of $25). Hours of operation are: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m., and Saturday 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. Swimming lessons can be arranged by contacting 1-877-277-SWIM (7946) or info(at)floatiesswimschool(dot)com.

Floaties’ instructors teach from a salt-water pool that remains at a comfortable 92 degrees. Children learn to be water-safe in and around a pool, surrounded by a non-threatening and fun environment.

“With the summer months approaching, it’s important to remember that drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death for young children,” said Mike Morrill. “May is National Drowning Prevention Month. Living in Southern California, we firmly believe that every child should learn how to swim early in life,” he said.

Team behind San Diego’s Idol contestant encouraging support for hometown favorite

A “View and Vote” event, emceed by “Little Tommy” Sablan of the Jeff and Jeff radio show on KYXY, will be held at the Oggi’s in Chula Vista to garner support for American Idol contestant Jessica Sanchez.

BACKGROUND: With an incredible voice, mature stage presence and a timely save from the judges during last week’s results show, San Diego’s Jessica Sanchez continues her amazing run on the eleventh season of American Idol. Each week Sanchez’s stunning performances have showcased her vocal skills and earned her plenty of support from the judges.  However, last week’s close call illustrates how important it is to win votes as well as rave reviews.

Team Sanchez – as the dedicated group of family and friends backing the local singer’s effort is known – will hold a “view and vote” party. The entire San Diego community is invited to join Chula Vista Mayor Cheryl Cox and Chula Vista’s own Tommy Sablan from the Jeff and Jer morning radio show in watching and voting for Sanchez. Sablan will emcee the event and welcome the EastLake Middle School Choir, the local school Sanchez attended as a youth, as the group performs prior to the show.

“I have always been blessed with a very high level of energy. I had taken very good care of myself in regards to eating properly and exercising,” Joan Wyllie, Founder of Nine Girls Ask? For A Cure For Ovarian Cancer. During October of 2007, Wyllie began experiencing a series of unusual symptoms including:

• Bloating
• Exhaustion
• Pelvic and bladder pressure
• Thickening of waistline
• Feeling of fullness
• Severe Constipation
• Slight to severe abdomen pain

Wyllie was misdiagnosed and mistreated by nine physicians over a six month period. She then took the role of a health advocate and insisted on laparoscopic surgery. On February 29, 2008 Wyllie received the shocking diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer Stage 4. She underwent seven hours of intensive surgery, six months of horrific chemotherapy and subsequent hospitalizations. Wyllie proudly states she is now dancing with NED (no evidence of disease).

Due to the lack of assistance for Ovarian Cancer patients, Wyllie decided there was an enormous need for an organization to raise funds for a cure for women. Wyllie formed Nine Girls Ask? For A Cure For Ovarian Cancer. This organization also offers “one-on-one” love and support, to include education and guidance through the journey of Ovarian Cancer to all women afflicted by this disease.

Approximately 350 women die each week from this cancer and one in every 70 women will be affected in their lifetime. This cancer affects woman of all ages and ethnicities and the sad thing is that most women do not even know they have it until it is too late.

On Friday, April 27, 2012 at 6pm, 520 students representing 40 area high schools will join together for the second annual celebration of “A Night to Remember”, a prom for special needs students.  This one of a kind event brings together 260 honored guests with special needs and 260 volunteer student hosts as well as over two hundred adult volunteers and the families and friends of the students attending the event.

Due to the generous support of the event sponsors, the evening’s honored guests will be attending free of charge.  Additionally, each participant will be provided with a tuxedo or prom dress, hairstyling and make-up, a corsage or boutonniere, a limo ride, a walk down the red carpet, a night of dancing, food, and a gift bag that includes two tickets to a Padres Game.  The goal of the event is to honor, love and celebrate students that sometimes feel marginalized.  Based on the overwhelming response to last year’s inaugural event and the response of the local community, this event is now sold out.

This San Diego event is founded and directed by Rob and Cheryl Shields, who were inspired by a similar event in Rob’s hometown of Rockford, IL.  It touched their hearts and they felt the desire to bring a similar event to San Diego.
