On Sunday, May 6, 2012 the 2nd Annual Miss Eastlake and Miss South Bay Scholarship Pageants were held at Eastlake High School.
Over 40 young women ages 10-24 years of age vied for the titles and the Educational Scholarships.

The fun run/walk will be held on the center’s inspirational grounds where participants have the opportunity to run along side Olympians through the exclusive Olympic Village — all to benefit a great cause! The U.S. Olympic Training Center, Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center and other sponsors have joined efforts and are partnering in the event to benefit four local Chula Vista charity organizations: Friends of the Chula Vista Nature Center, Friends of Chula Vista Library, Friends of Chula Vista Park and Recreation and H.E.A.R.T. for the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility.

Recently City of Chula Vista officials received notification that the Chula Vista Police Department is the highest ranked police station in the United States, according to a survey conducted by the Vera Institute of Justice in New York.
The City of Chula Vista will welcome home 16-year-old singing sensation and hometown resident, Jessica Sanchez on Saturday, May 12 with a celebration featuring a procession, rally and mini concert. The homecoming will be filmed by American Idol camera crews and will air next week on the Fox Network.

The Arc of San Diego’s Starlight Center is hosting its annual SpringFest Barbeque on Friday, May 18, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at 1280 Nolan Avenue in Chula Vista.
All proceeds benefit the Starlight Center’s Capital Campaign. The campaign raises much needed funds for the revitalization of the Starlight Center. Each SpringFest fundraising event brings the center one step closer to making the Starlight Center a better, more accessible place to serve people with disabilities.

On May 8, 2012, the Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners and the Chula Vista City Council unanimously approved the financing agreement for the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan (CVBMP). Following a decade-long community participation and planning process, the actions taken by both governing bodies are the first steps in implementing a plan designed to transform 556 acres of Chula Vista’s underused industrial bayfront landscape into a thriving residential and resort destination on San Diego Bay.

Hundreds of parents and teachers rallied outside Monday night’s Sweetwater Union High School District board meeting, expressing their anger about the layoffs their school district is facing.
Sweetwater Union board meetings have become volatile since some board members were criminally charged for using their positions for personal gain. On Monday night, there were at least three Chula Vista police officers outside the meeting and four security guards inside.

On Monday, May 7, Chula Vista Mayor Cox attended the Eastlake Business Association’s weekly meeting as their featured speaker.
This was the first attendance by the Chula Vista mayor at the Association’s weekly meeting, where she described Chula Vista’s current projects and the future and vision of Chula Vista and the Eastlake area.

Otay Water District’s Board of Directors unanimously voted to appoint Mitch Thompson to fill the vacancy that resulted from the resignation of board member Jaime Bonilla. Following the vote by the Board of Directors, the Oath of Office was administered and Mr. Thompson immediately assumed all powers and duties of a member of the Board of Directors.

Oakland, Calif.-based Silverado Contractors Inc. has been hired to demolish the above-ground structures of the non-operating South Bay Power Plant in Chula Vista.
Dynegy South Bay Inc., which operates and owns the South Bay Power Plant, said it selected the demolition contractor based on its “qualifications, favorable pricing and the overall merits of its proposal.”

The Chula Vista Elementary School District has appointed longtime educator Glendora M. Tremper as its newest trustee. Tremper, a bilingual language-speech and hearing specialist and former student services coordinator at South Bay Union School District, was sworn in by Superintendent Francisco Escobedo at a special board meeting Monday night at the Education Service and Support Center.

There was plenty of food and wine at the 4th Annual Bon Appétit event hosted by the Chula Vista Public Library Foundation. The event was well attended by the community in hopes of raising much needed money for Chula Vista libraries. Local restaurants and merchants were on hand to serve up some of their delicious food and spirits. It was truly a celebration of food and wine all for a good cause.
Last Saturday, for the 16th year in a row, cyclists met at the Otay Ranch Town Center to participate in one of Eastlake’s biggest events, Cycle Eastlake 2012.
The charity event, aimed at supporting and raising money for local schools had over 100 more riders than last year and was a complete success.

Nine Girls Ask? For A Cure For Ovarian Cancer is local non-profit organization dedicated to finding a cure for ovarian cancer. They do this by providing financial assistance towards the advancement of research, screening testing, a cure and offering resources for treatment options to women who are in recurrence.

Floaties Swim School, a year-round indoor swimming school, is opening for swimming lessons on Monday, April 23, at its new swimming facility located at 851 Showroom Place, Suite 102, Chula Vista, California, 91914. The swimming complex also combines a playroom and party room for private events. Last Sunday, the fourth edition of GranFondo Cannondale San Diego painted the streets of downtown Little Italy with the finest of bikes, colorful jerseys and thousands of avid cyclists about to embark on a 60 or 108 mile pursuit throughout scenic San Diego.
