The Little League Challenger Division was established in 1989 as a separate division of Little League to enable boys and girls with physical and mental challenges, (ages 4-18, or up to age 22 if still enrolled in high school), to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide. Today, more than 30,000 children participate in more than 900 Challenger Divisions worldwide.

Teams are set up according to abilities, rather than age, and can include as many as 15-20 players. Challenger games can be played as tee ball games, coach pitch, player pitch, or a combination of the three.

In 2012, Eastlake Little League has announced they will be launching their own Challenger Division.

Amy Slike, an Eastlake resident, & Arryo Vista Elementary School teacher and Eastlake Little League volunteer, said “The Challenger Division of Little League baseball is a program for differently abled youth to enjoy the full benefits of little league participation in an athletic environment structured to their needs. Our games will be on Saturday mornings from 8:00 am till about 9:30. Our season will start up in March and will run through May”

One of the benefits of having a Challenger Division is that it encourages the use of “buddies” for the Challenger players. The buddies assist the Challenger players on the field, but whenever possible, encourage the players to bat and make plays themselves. However, the buddy is always nearby to help when needed.

Amy continues, “The structure of the division will be that all players will play the field while the other team bats. The team that is up to bat will bat the their (entire) line up. The last batter will be our “home-run” hitter and run all the way home after the hit. Score will not be kept during these games. The main focus will be for all to enjoy the game of baseball and develop friendships with other kids.”

Parents and teenagers are strongly encouraged to become involved in this uniquely-rewarding division of Little League.

Registration will be open until all spots are full. Parents can print off the registration form and either mail it in or bring it to the field.

Registration: $50.00

Following his gold medal performance in the 100m (T42 category) at the 2011 Parapan American Games, Shaquille Vance was selected as the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center Athlete of the Month. He began training here in February of this year and has already made waves as a Paralympic hopeful. During the Mt. San Antonio College Relays in April 2011, he set a new American record in the T42 200m sprint with a time of just 27.18 seconds.

The time period of just two years can make quite a difference – it was in April 2009 that Shaquille suffered a major leg injury while playing a game of pick-up football with friends. An unfortunate tackle twisted his body, but kept his leg standing still, destroying ligaments along with it. He endured a long surgery to try repairing it, but his leg ended up being amputated.

In his native Houston, Mississippi, Shaquille had been the starting wide receiver and linebacker for his high school football team. Though he still loves football, he turned to track events as a way to still compete in athletics.

In an interview with one of the Mississippi news stations, Shaquille said, “God blessed me with another sport so I can compete
again. When I got hurt, I didn’t think I could compete against anyone again, but I can. There are so many people who supported
me and I wanted to do it to show them how much that meant to me.” As he continues to train for the 2012 Paralympics, he aims to be someone who never gives up when faced with life’s obstacles.

When he was asked what it takes to be a champion, he said “God, hard work, dedication, persistence, confidence, desire, and
teamwork is a formula that works for me.”

NORMAN, Okla. — Few people were more excited about the possibility of Oklahoma joining the Pac-12 Conference than sophomores Brennan Clay, Kenny Stills and Tony Jefferson.

The members of the “Cali Trio,” as the threesome has been called, were pumped about the opportunity for the Sooners to claim their stake on the recruiting trail in California.

Though they have no problems at all with staying in the Big 12, they were understandably a little upset about not joining the Pac-12. They felt a great opportunity to reach out to California kids was lost.

The ground attack was led by the formidable RB tandem of Roman Coe and Clarence Freeman IV.

The Panthers kept their offense on the field by controlling the clock with a dominant running game. A touchdown reception from the combination of QB DiMaggio Cazares to WR Darius Advento put the game out of reach before halftime.

Led by defensive Linebacker Jonathan Alvarez, the undefeated Eastlake Panthers had a great defensive game plan to limit the effectiveness of the Otay Ranch offense.

The Eastlake Panthers finish the season at: 12-0.

The Otay Ranch Broncos fall to 10-2 on the season.

Congratulations to both teams for such a succesful season.
