Plans for Power Plant in Otay Valley Dismissed
Community of Eastlake, Eastlake News Thursday, November 4th, 2010A 300 Mega Watt natural gas fired power plant proposed on public parkland in the Otay Valley Regional Park was dismissed recently by APEX Group, LLC, the power plant’s proposed developers.
“It really came down to a business decision,” Apex Vice President David Jenkins said. “The original site had a number of risks associated with it”
Challenges included securing new zoning designations within the city to build the plant.
Proponents of the project argued that the proposed plant would have had negative impacts to the native ecosystem and the public’s ability to enjoy the Otay Lakes County Park and the Otay Valley Regional Park.
Fay Crevoshay Communications Director for WiLDCOAST, a San Diego based International conservation team preserving endangered marine species said, “WiLDCOAST applauds APEX for making the right decision. The Otay Valley Regional Park is not a good place to put a power plant. The plan was incompatible with the community’s efforts to conserve the few open space areas we have left for wildlife and public recreation,”
Apex Power Group, LLC is is assessing a new site on Alta Road in unincorporated Otay Mesa.
