Eastlake Little League’s Challenger Division

The Little League Challenger Division was established in 1989 as a separate division of Little League to enable boys and girls with physical and mental challenges, (ages 4-18, or up to age 22 if still enrolled in high school), to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide. Today, more than 30,000 children participate in more than 900 Challenger Divisions worldwide.

For the first time ever, the Korean National Team will be traveling to America to compete against our very own Chula Vista Bombers & Baron Baseball teams.

Could Your Child be Anemic?

It’s cold and flu season, so no big surprise that I am seeing lots of coughs, colds, sore throats and fevers. What is surprising though is all of the infants and children with anemia. Most cases of anemia in children are a result of iron deficiency and that’s exactly what I am seeing. In fact, iron deficiency is one of the most common yet undetected problems in children. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends screening for anemia at the 9-month, 2-year, and 5-year exams. Because of how common anemia seems to be, I not only follow these guidelines, but I check at 9 months, and every well-child exam from 2 years and up.

Eastlake Networking Group Helps Small Business: Hosting Free Presentation on Mobile Marketing

As the ailing U.S. economy crawls to recovery, some local business owners in Eastlake have seized the opportunity to grow their businesses through innovative technology and good-old-fashioned networking.

The Eastlake Networking Group is a brand new group started by business professionals in Eastlake.  It was formed to help small and large businesses make connections and generate referrals. The group meets every week on Monday’s at Tacos & Tarros in the Otay Ranch Town Center. Meetings start at 11:30am and last till about 12:30pm. All business owners are encouraged to come out and there is no membership fee for joining.

2012 Bonita Valley Girls Softball Association Signups

The Bonita Valley Girls Softball Association is currently conducting its sign-ups for the 2012 spring season. The season will begin on February 11th, 2012. We are very excited to offer over 650 young women the opportunity to play softball at a competitive level, while maintaining the utmost in respect for the game, and each other. Register before December 14th to take advantage of the lower registration rate. Girls from ages 4 to 14 are invited. Girls trying out for high school ball can register and receive a full refund if they make their high school team. Registration will close on January 14, 2012.

CV OTC December 2011 Athlete of the Month: Shaquille Vance

Following his gold medal performance in the 100m (T42 category) at the 2011 Parapan American Games, Shaquille Vance was selected as the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center Athlete of the Month. He began training here in February of this year and has already made waves as a Paralympic hopeful. During the Mt. San Antonio College Relays in April 2011, he set a new American record in the T42 200m sprint with a time of just 27.18 seconds.

Homeless for the Holidays, but Help Comes from Five Local UPS Stores & Area Nonprofit

Store owners offer deeply discounted shipping and materials in exchange for cold weather donations

San Diego, CA — November 30, 2011 — Two local The UPS Store owners are serving an extra dose of holiday merriment at their five locations while helping to ensure the area’s most destitute individuals and families are kept warm during the region’s coldest season. Now through December 25, 2011, customers who bring in a new or gently used cold weather apparel item, including beanies, socks, gloves and scarves, can benefit from having their shipments expertly packed and save 25 percent off packaging and discounts on Air shipping. The wares will be distributed via winter survival backpacks to displaced San Diegans by Girls Think Tank (GTT), a nonprofit that empowers the community to advance basic dignity through advocacy and activism.

Black Friday Comes Early This Year

Target, Best Buy and Kohl’s are among retailers opening their doors at midnight Thursday to give shoppers a jump on the Black Friday experience.

Black Friday deals — so-called doorbusters — this year include a 40-inch HDTV for $265 at Target, a 15.6-inch $299.99 Samsung laptop,  down from $999.99 at Best Buy. (The laptop runs an Intel Pentium processor, has 4GB of memory, and a 320GB hard drive); Selected Bulova watches for men and women for $99 at Kohl’s.

The number of home cooking fires on Thanksgiving Day was three times the national average of fires per day in 2009.

FHFA mortgage interest rates fall slightly

The average interest rate on mortgages sold to the government-sponsored enterprises fell 20 basis points to 4.36% in October, the Federal Housing Finance Agency said.

The agency bases its average rates on conventional, 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage purchases of $417,000 or less.

Burlgary Alert near SWC during daytime

Chula Vista Police Department is alerting residents in the Southwestern College area to recent daytime home burglaries.

Suspects have been seen driving a white van, and a Silver Nissan Armada.

The suspects have been carrying backpacks and have been targeting electronics and jewelry items.
