Learn the basics of climbing in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. This class will include an overview of the sport as well as individualized instruction in belaying, climbing equipment and climbing technique. All gear is provided.

Join one of our professional climbing instructors for a small group coaching session and take your climbing to the next level! This course is for people who have learned belaying and basic climbing movement and would like some more time to practice your skills. This is an in-store class.

Artificial Rock Climbing Anchors Class
Learn the basics of building climbing anchor systems with traditional gear. This is a hands on program where you will build climbing anchors. This outing will focus on construction and assessment of anchors and not on climbing movement.

This is your opportunity to climb outdoors with professional rock climbing instructors. We’ll teach solid fundamental skills such as belaying, crack climbing and face climbing. All gear is provided. Families are welcome; under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.

Introduction to Map & Compass Class

On this course You’ll learn to read map contour lines and translate them to the actual terrain. With your compass we’ll teach you about magnetic north, true north and declination. Then we’ll put it all together to pinpoint your location and plan your route.

Introduction to Mountain Biking Class

On easy terrain, our instructors teach basic techniques such as shifting, braking, ascending, descending and maneuvering obstacles. Novara mountain bikes are provided free for those without a bike. Recommended for ages 14 and older; under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.

Fundamentals of GPS Navigation Class

This class will lead you through both fun and practical applications of GPS navigation. Learn how to pinpoint your location, mark waypoints, plot courses and create routes. At the end of the class, we’ll go outdoors for hands-on experience. GPS units available, but feel free to bring your own.

Backcountry Cooking Class

In this hands-on field course, REI Outdoor School instructors will teach you how to build a camp kitchen, design a menu and prepare tasty, nutritious meals. All stoves, kitchen materials and food ingredients are provided (with options for both vegetarians and meat eaters).

Break out of your usual evening routine and join our instructors for a sunset tour at one of our favorite kayaking destinations! After some basic instruction, we’ll take a short paddle tour of the area and find a nice spot to watch the sunset from out on the water. This is a great way to get some extra paddling practice and meet new friends.
