Thorpe Cup in Arco Training Center in Eastlake on August 13th and August 14th

Thorpe Cup, an international track and field competition between USA and Germany.  Admission is free and spectators are encouraged to bring chairs.

Where:        Chula Vista Olympic Training Center (2800 Olympic Parkway, Chula Vista 91915)

When:          Saturday, August 13, 11:30 am – 7:00 pm

Sunday, August 14, 12:00 – 6:30 pm

Who:             Elite Team USA track athletes, current and former national and Olympic champions; elite German athletes

Additional Event Information:

The teams are made up of up to seven men and seven women who compete in decathlon and heptathlon.  The decathlon (men) consists of the 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m, 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m.  The heptathlon (women) consists of the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin and 800m.  An exact schedule of events is below.

Team USA is represented by some of the highest ranked finishers from the recent USA national championships in Eugene along with NCAA and USA indoor champions.  Team Zehnkampf (Germany) is bringing elite athletes

Ryan Harlan (USA national runner-up), Trey Hardee (reigning world champion), Ashton Eaton (USA national champion) and Bryan Clay (2008 Olympic Gold Medalist) will all be on hand in Chula Vista to participate in individual events as a tune-up to the World Championships in Daegu.  Dan O’Brien (1996 Olympic Gold Medalist) will be here to provide commentary throughout the event.

This is the 17th annual event.  Germany broke Team USA’s seven-year winning streak with their win in 2010, which was decided by just 13 points out of a total score of over 77,000.
