Yes on Proposition G in Eastlake, And Chula Vista

CHULA VISTA -

Promoters say Proposition G would bar deals in which only union workers could be hired for city-subsidized projects, such as the failed Gaylord Entertainment hotel and convention center that had been proposed for the bayfront.

Union groups said the measure is discriminatory because it targets workers based on their union status.

So, which side do you choose when the measure is determined on the ballot on June 8, 2010?

History of Project Labor Agreements

A (PLA) project labor agreement refers to a pact between government and labor unions on public works contracts.

Ordinances that ban project labor agreements are new to California but they haven’t been proven to “ban” union workers altogether. Orange County, for example, passed an ordinance with similar language about union benefits last year. Orange County public works officials also said they don’t track whether or not projects awarded since the county passed its ordinance have used union workers. The county doesn’t ask bidders for that information, and as far as awarding the contract is concerned, it’s irrelevant whether the contractor uses union or nonunion workers. (1)

Proposition G insures 100% of local firms and employees can compete for public – funded projects. There is nothing to restrict an agreement designed to promote veterans and local workers further.

Eastlaketimes believes the heart of the issue is about fairness, opportunity and getting taxpayers the best product at the best price.

Eastlake Times endorses Proposition G, a measure that would prohibit Eastlake and Chula Vists from inflicting project labor agreements on the workplace and the city’s future. Prop G stops discrimination against non-union workers, it does not harm union-workers who want to compete.
