CVPOA Board of Directors loses Member after being called to Active Duty with Navy Reserves; New Director joins Board

The Chula Vista Police Officer’s Association (CVPOA) Board of Directors is saying goodbye to one of its directors after Board Member Sgt. Miriam Byron announced she was being called to active duty with the U.S. Navy Reserves next month.
Byron, who has served the CVPOA Board as a director for 1-½ years and works as a patrol sergeant with the Chula Vista Police Department, is being recalled to active duty on July 1 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
She is first headed for training in Texas before going overseas for a year as a lieutenant with the Navy Reserves. Byron has served in the United States Navy, combined Active Duty and Reserves, for 21 years. Her current assignment is Commanding Officer of NR NSF Seal Beach.
“I absolutely love it,” Byron said of working with the Reserves. “I could have retired at 20 years. It’s like having a full-time, part-time job. It’s really rewarding. It’s hard to juggle two careers but it’s doable.”
This will be her second recall with the Reserves. In September 2001 she served for one year as an base military police at NAF El Centro.
Replacing Byron on the CVPOA Board will be Ofc. Ken Hicks, who has been with the police department for 9 years and serves as a patrol officer. He will finish Byron’s term, which expires in January 2013.
“I hate to leave but I know it’s an important job,” Byron said. “I will feel homesick. This is my home but the city is supportive and I know that I’ll have a job when I get back.”
Byron has worked with the department for nearly 13 years. Two agents will fill her position, acting patrol sergeant, within the police force, one to serve for six months and the other for the rest of her absence.
