Early Returns Show Proposition H Trailing
A controversial tax measure in Chula Vista appeared destined to fail Tuesday night.
According to city officials, Proposition H would update and extend a telecommunications tax for residents. Chula Vista residents have been paying the Utility Users Tax since the 1970s and current residents pay between $.80 and $4.00 a month on their phone bill.
The tax brings in between $5 million and $6 million per year for the cash-strapped city.
As of 11 p.m., with 26 percent of precincts reporting, 55 percent of voters chose to reject Prop. H and only 44 percent are in approval of it.
