Navy Medicine West Opens Clinic in Eastlakehttp://www.eastlaketimes.com/navy-medicine-west-opens-clinic-in-eastlake/ http://www.eastlaketimes.com/navy-medicine-west-opens-clinic-in-eastlake/#comments Tue, 30 Apr 2013 02:52:12 +0000 Eastlake Times http://www.eastlaketimes.com/?p=6547

Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) is scheduled to celebrate the grand opening of one of its newest clinics during a ribbon cutting ceremony April 30.

Branch Health Clinic Eastlake is one of two Navy medical clinics in San Diego County that recently began treating patients.  The Eastlake location offers primary care, immunizations, pharmacy, and other health services to 4,800 eligible beneficiaries — including TRICARE Prime family members, military retirees and their relatives.

Naval Branch Health Clinic (NBHC) Eastlake is poised to continue the hospital’s legacy of providing top-notch care to our nation’s heroes and those who stand by them.

“I am truly honored and proud to introduce our patients to Naval Medical Center San Diego’s newest addition, Branch Health Clinic Eastlake. We are excited to expand the quality health care our families currently receive and provide them additional convenient options for their health care needs,” said Commander, NMCSD and Navy Medicine West, Rear Adm. C. Forrest Faison III. “Patients at the new Branch Health Clinic Eastlake will continue to receive world-class, patient-centered care through our Medical Home model of primary care services, providing consolidated services within one state-of-the-art location in the community where they live by a dedicated team of professionals.”

NBHC Eastlake is staffed by a patient and family-centered Medical Home Port team that delivers primary care, immunizations, pharmacy, phlebotomy, case management and health and wellness services to 4,800 eligible beneficiaries. Essentially a “one stop shop” designed to cater to patients’ varying medical needs, NBHC Eastlake is conveniently located to home, work and play and will assist in lightening the load on neighboring Branch Health Clinic Chula Vista, allowing for more personalized patient care, according to NMCSD’s Facilities Department Project Officer, Lt. Cmdr. Richard J. Taulli.

The clinic boasts 13 examination rooms in a 9,400-square-foot facility. Planning for the new clinic began in 2009; construction commenced in November 2012 and was completed in March 2013 with great success, according to Taulli.

Student faces charges for spitting from bushttp://www.eastlaketimes.com/student-faces-charges-spitting-bus/ http://www.eastlaketimes.com/student-faces-charges-spitting-bus/#comments Fri, 22 Jun 2012 13:54:25 +0000 Eastlake Times http://www.eastlaketimes.com/?p=6290

An Eastlake Middle school student whose spit sailed out a school bus window and into a nearby sunroof says the landing was inadvertent.

The recipient of the saliva was so incensed by the act that he chased down the bus and pressed criminal charges.

Michael Crowe, 12, was suspended for five days in January, kicked out of Eastlake Middle School and is now facing a criminal charge of battery recommended by the Chula Vista Police Department.

Battery is defined in the state penal code as “any willful and unlawful use of force or violence upon the person of another,” and is listed among the requisite reasons for a suspension or expulsion in the state education code.

Michael was not expelled from the district, but was transferred to alternative education to finish out seventh grade.

Michael’s mother contends that her son spat his gum out of the window, and some of the saliva landed on the driver inadvertently. The school’s report of the incident indicates Michael aimed his spit at the car.

The following day, Michael was questioned and arrested by the school resource officer.

Michael was then asked to clear out his locker and leave Eastlake Middle after he was cited in school documents with willful use of force or violence upon the person of another and for disruption and defiance.

The Chula Vista Police Department would not release its report on the matter, only a brief summary. It identified the victim as M. Young, and indicated “the spit landed on his face and his daughter’s face.” The report places the incident at Clubhouse Drive and Hunte Parkway, near Eastlake Greens Golf Course.

Michael was scheduled to meet with a county probation officer Tuesday morning in Chula Vista as part of the criminal process, county documents show. His mother requested that the appointment be rescheduled as she appeals the misdemeanor charge.

In disputed juvenile cases, a judge determines whether claims against a juvenile are true. If valid, the charge remains on the youth’s record until the age of 18, at which point, the offender may request the record be sealed, Capt. Turner said.

Robert Fellmeth, executive director of the University of San Diego’s Children’s Advocacy Institute and former deputy district attorney and assistant U.S. Attorney in San Diego, said intent is key.

Otay Ranch Farmers Market Begins Fifth Year At Otay Ranch Town Centerhttp://www.eastlaketimes.com/spring-fruits-vegetables-in-season-as-farmers-market-begins-fifth-year-at-otay-ranch-town-center/ http://www.eastlaketimes.com/spring-fruits-vegetables-in-season-as-farmers-market-begins-fifth-year-at-otay-ranch-town-center/#comments Fri, 15 Jun 2012 08:12:57 +0000 Eastlake Times http://www.eastlaketimes.com/?p=6202

Otay Ranch Farmers Market

Every Tuesday afternoon for the last four years, the main street running down Otay Ranch Town Center has been converted into a gathering place for local growers, food vendors and more for a certified Farmer’s Market where customers can choose countless crates of farm-fresh and seasonal fruits and vegetables from dozens of California farmers. With spring in full swing, participating sellers are offering some of the latest seasonal top picks, including asparagus, cherries, avocados, strawberries and heirloom tomatoes.

Many of the vendors also offer great cooking techniques and tips, including this quick lesson on how to turn fresh heirloom tomatoes into delicious toppings for salads and cold pasta:

Dip tomatoes into boiling water to loosen skins, then peel and either slice or quarter.

Dry in a preheated oven at 130-degrees for 6-12 hours (or until crisp).

Once dried, these delicious tomatoes can be kept through the fall season; sprinkle on your favorite salad or any other dish!

Sponsored locally by Lipton, shoppers also can enjoy free, family friendly entertainment each week at the market. Musicians vary by week, but a sample of this year’s spring and summer performers include Mendez Legacy (Latin) and The Frains (Classic Rock).

The newly opened Otay Ranch Branch of the Chula Vista Library at the center also will offer a free story time every week at 5 p.m. in the fireplace lounge with the Summer Reading Program launching in early June and featuring live performances like Amazing Dana Magic Show, Mad Science: Dream Big with Science and the Wild Wonders Animal show, among others. A full rundown of all entertainment is available at www.otayranchtowncenter.com.

“We are proud to have maintained this unique market opportunity for the last four years,” said Tim Colby, senior general manager at Otay Ranch Town Center. “Our guests can enjoy a great selection of produce, specialty food items and live entertainment throughout the year,” he added.

Vendors participating each week offer great food choices and diversity. A small sampling of this season’s vendors include:

Drift Sushi Catering (fresh sushi rolled on the spot)

The Cookie Lady (gourmet cookies and desserts)

Gourmet Tamales (authentic and also with a twist, adding spinach and feta, etc.)

Poppas Fresh Fish (offering oysters)

Flavors of East Africa (Samosas with lentils are a popular seller)

Halphen Red (a local hamburger sauce company selling bottles of their signature sauce as well as burgers and salmon burgers with fries)

The Otay Ranch Farmer’s Market is the only year-round market in the eastern part of South County.

Certified by the County Agricultural Commissioner, the market sells produce that is being sold directly by the grower, is grown in California and meets all California quality standards.

About Otay Ranch Town Center:

Chang’s China Bistro, The Cheesecake Factory, King’s Fish House, Romano’s Macaroni Grill, Sushi-Ya, California Pizza Kitchen or many on-the-go dining options. Toll Cuts Will Go Into Effect June 30th on SB Expressway; Drivers will see savings of up to 40 percenthttp://www.eastlaketimes.com/toll-cuts-will-go-into-effect-june-30-on-south-bay-expressway-drivers-will-see-savings-40-percent/ http://www.eastlaketimes.com/toll-cuts-will-go-into-effect-june-30-on-south-bay-expressway-drivers-will-see-savings-40-percent/#comments Wed, 13 Jun 2012 19:41:57 +0000 Eastlake Times http://www.eastlaketimes.com/?p=6172

Effective Saturday, June 30, SANDAG will cut tolls for using State Route 125/South Bay Expressway by as much as 40 percent.

Savings for customers enrolled in the FasTrak electronic tolling system will be especially dramatic. New tolls will range from 50 cents to $2.75 for FasTrak users and from $2 to $3.50 for cash and credit card users. Current tolls are 85 cents to $3.85 for FasTrak users and $2.50 to $4 for cash and credit card users.

“We are following through with our promise to taxpayers to lower tolls on South Bay Expressway,” SANDAG Chairman and Encinitas Mayor Jerome Stocks said. “We are optimistic that lower tolls will draw traffic away from nearby congested arterial streets and Interstate 805, improving overall mobility in South Bay.”

The revamped toll structure was approved by the SANDAG Board of Directors on May 25, 2012. SANDAG acquired the lease to operate the toll road in December 2011.

As a public agency whose mission is to improve mobility in the region, SANDAG’s business approach is different from that of the previous toll road operator. The new toll schedule balances toll reductions against generating enough revenue to pay for operations and maintenance, debt service, future improvements, and contingencies

South Bay Expressway stretches for about 10 miles through eastern Chula Vista from State Route 905 near the Otay Mesa Port of Entry to State Route 54 near the Sweetwater Reservoir. To learn more about the toll road, visit http://www.southbayexpressway.com/.

About SANDAG

The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) is the San Diego region’s primary public planning, transportation, and research agency, providing the public forum for regional policy decisions about growth, transportation planning and construction, environmental management, housing, open space, energy, public safety, and binational topics. SANDAG is governed by a Board of Directors composed of mayors, council members, and supervisors from each of the region’s 18 cities and the county government.
