Chula Vista’s WARN Program Recognized
The City of Chula Vista received a “Creating Community Award of Excellence” from the California Park and Recreation Society (CPRS) for its Water Awareness in Residential Neighborhoods (WARN) program.
The City was recognized at the California and Pacific Southwest Recreation and Park Training conference held in San Jose last week. In response to the fatal drownings of three children in 2007, the City’s Fire and Recreation Departments developed the (WARN) program, a comprehensive drowning prevention plan to educate residents about water safety. City staff worked diligently to target Chula Vista’s residents using professional partnerships, creative solutions, ingenious marketing and family events.
Each year since, staff has provided information on the program to Chula Vistans who own back yard swimming pools. Since the inception of the WARN program in late 2007, there have not been any drownings in the City of Chula Vista. “The CPRS awards program is the highest recognition our agency can receive and our award is a credit to the staff, volunteers and partners who made this happen,” said Kristi McClure, Assistant Director of Recreation for the City of Chula Vista. “We are honored to receive this award on behalf of our residents.” CPRS is a membership organization with 3,400 members representing 535 local parks and recreation agencies throughout the state of California. Their mission is to advance the profession and its members through education, networking, resources, and advocacy.
