Chula Vista Bayfront Plant Permitted to Keep Operating

CHULA VISTA — Regional water pollution regulators left the door open on Wednesday for the South Bay Power Plant to continue operating through 2011 — maybe longer.

South Bay civic leaders and conservationists have tried to force the plant’s closure for years, citing environmental problems with a facility that dates to the 1960s. Several of them asked the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board on Wednesday to terminate a permit that allows the plant to discharge cooling water into south San Diego Bay.

Board members said they were sympathetic to the request but voted 4-1 to allow the plant to continue with its permit, which is due to expire Dec. 31.
