Students at Liberty Elementary Receive Masonic Awards

The Masonic Lodge presented citizenship awards to Grade 6 students at Liberty Elementary school and at special assemblies across the Chula Vista Elementary School District. Since 1920, Public Schools Month has been sponsored and promoted every April by the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of California. The purpose is to encourage communities and schools to set aside time to honor public schools and enlist the community’s continued support for public education. That message is as important today as it was in 1920.

The Board of Education in partnership with the Chula Vista Masonic Lodge celebrate Public Schools Month and present the citizenship awards to deserving Grade 6 students. The students were selected by their teachers using criteria that included behavior, participation in school activities, leadership within peer groups, use of courtesies and proper manners.

Don Bridwell, chairman of the Masonic Awards program, noted that many former award recipients are now in public service, including at District schools that welcomed this year’s Masonic teams.

“The most important thing is the tremendous satisfaction we see in the eyes of the teachers, principals, and especially the kids,” Mr. Bridwell said. “They are really proud. Sometimes, the kids might get to feeling beaten down with all the negativity that’s out there. I think this program really brings them up. It lifts their hopes up.”

Mr. Bridwell noted that his brother Masons were overwhelmed by their warm reception at the schools, and the beautiful condition of District campuses.

“The schools are really fabulous,” Mr. Bridwell said. “People don’t know what our public schools are really like. They ought to come out and see for themselves all the good things that are really happening.”

Masonic support for public schools dates back to the founding of America. California Masons in particular have a long history of public schools support, providing scholarships of various sizes and awards.
