Hundreds of BMX fans will gather at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista this weekend to cheer on Olympic hopefuls for this year’s London Games.
Local BMXers, Nic Long of Lakeside and Mike Day of San Diego, will be competing for a spot on the team — and both were previously named to the USA Cycling BMX men’s long team in 2008. They will enter in two time trials, three moto races and a finale.
At the end of the tournament, a winner will automatically earn a nomination to the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team.
In addition to the tournament, an exposition area will be open to the public before the games. BMX fanatics can check out the gear Olympic athletes use in competition.
The event begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 16 in Chula Vista. Time trials begin at 3:05 p.m. Cost is $10, but children younger than 4 are free.
