Two arrested with sketch, gun after Chula Vista pursuit
Community of Eastlake, Eastlake News, Police Blotter Friday, August 6th, 2010CHULA VISTA — A man and woman who led Chula Vista officers on a high-speed pursuit up and down Interstate 805 early Thursday were arrested with a pistol and a sketch of the inside layout of a drug store in their car, police said.
“The sketch indicates they may have been thinking of breaking into the CVS,” said police spokesman Bernard Gonzales.
Gonzales said a man and a woman were parked in a car in the CVS lot, facing the closed drug store near C Street, shortly after midnight. The man was in the driver’s seat. When he saw a patrol car, he drove away in the 1992 Buick LaSabre with the female passenger.
The Buick ran a red light a few blocks away at Brisbane Street. An officer went in pursuit as the driver accelerated away, with the car getting on north I-805 and traveling at speeds up to 100 mph, Gonzales said.
The driver got off the freeway, then came back on again south of Telegraph Canyon Road and headed north again on I-805, again at speeds sometimes in excess of 100 mph.
He stopped the car in the middle of the freeway just before the state Route 54 interchange and ran across the northbound I-805 lanes.
Officers pursued, and one shot the man with a Taser. Gonzales said the driver was taken to a hospital complaining of back pain.
The female passenger reportedly struggled with officers but also was arrested.
Gonzales said police found a pistol and the drug-store sketch in the car. The suspects may have been under the influence of narcotics, he said.
