Man Injured In Alleged Machete Attack

A fight in front of a Chula Vista convenience store early Friday morning led to one man injured possibly from a machete attack and another man in custody.

The incident occurred at a 7-Eleven store on the corner of Broadway and Naples Street around 4:25 a.m. Friday, police said.

A witness told police the victim was talking on a pay phone in front of the store and was approached by two women who became upset after the victim would not let them use the phone, said police Lt. Scott Arsenault. The victim was then approached by two men, words were exchanged and a fight broke out.

The witness told police the victim was stabbed with a machete during the fight and entered the store bleeding from a large cut on his arm.

Police arrived and attempted to gather evidence and treat the victim, but he ran from the store heading south on Broadway, police said. Police lost sight of the man after he began jumping fences.

He ran to an apartment building in the 1000 block of Broadway where he searched for the other suspects, and vandalized several cars in the parking lot as well, Arsenault said.

The man kicked in an apartment door and when he did not find who he was looking for, proceeded to the back of the building and broke out a window at the apartment of documented gang member Jose Francisco Sierra, who police did not believe was involved in the fight, but may have known the suspects.

A subsequent search of Sierra’s apartment turned up a handgun and a sword, which police did not believe to be used in the attack. Sierra, 47, was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Another apartment resident fired a “warning shot,” which did not strike anyone, and police found expended shotgun shells.

The victim was taken to a hospital to be treated and will face criminal charges as well, Arsenault said.

Detectives continued to investigate the incident on Saturday and were searching for at least two others who were involved.
