Lower Otay Reservoir will be closed to the public the week of August 16 – 22, 2010, to allow a salvage operation to recover a World War II dive bomber.

There will be no boating allowed on August 18, 21 or 22.

Normally, Lower Otay Reservoir is open to the public on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The U.S. Navy SB2C Helldiver crashed into the reservoir during a training flight in 1945. The two-person crew survived. The plane remained mostly forgotten until February 2009, when a local fisherman spotted the outline of the plane on his electronic fish finder.

Through private donations, the National Naval Aviation Museum of Pensacola, Fla., is financing the salvage operation. The museum hopes to restore the plane and display it.
