Eastlake High Student, Daniela Contreras Joins Eastlaketimes.com

A Look inside Staff Writer Daniela Contreras

In this exclusive interview, Eastlaketimes.com interviews Eastlake, CA resident and Eastlake High Senior, and writer, Daniela Contreras.

ELT: Tell us a little about how you got involved with writing.

Fortunately, articulating my ideas has been something that comes natural to me. I have been fortunate enough to have teachers throughout the years that have challenged me and because of this, I realized that not everyone has a knack for writing, or the motivation to improve the skills that come along with it. I believe my education and the people I have met along the way have encouraged me in pursuing a journalistic career.

ELT: What do you like most about writing?

There is something about words. The way they sound put together. The malleability in which endless messages can be conveyed. But most importantly, the amount of power they hold with a silent yet powerful ability to influence. To me, writing is more than a form of expression: the fact that a single sentence can appeal to emotions, even those of strangers, is what I love the most about writing.

ELT: What are some of the challenges a new writer may face?

In my opinion, finding a style and staying true to your own voice is most difficult, especially when admiring celebrated authors like Miguel de Cervantes or Henry David Thoreau. There is the persistent doubt that runs rampant in the mind, one that constantly reminds you that your writing is not good enough, but ignoring that voice and having confidence in your words is what makes a good writer.

ELT: What is your short term and long term vision of your writing career?

In the near future, I hope to write several pieces for the Eastlake Times as well as other local publications. As for long term goals, I would love to study abroad to study and eventually write in other languages besides English. If I stay in the U.S., I strive to become a syndicated columnist.

ELT: Is there a website where our readers can get more information?

As of now, the Eastlake Times is where I am doing most of my writing but I also write for Eastlake High’s The Edge. My official title is Sports Editor, but I write other articles as well.
