CHULA VISTA POLICE ARREST THREE VEHICLE BURGLARY SUSPECTS AFTER PURSUIT AND FOOT SEARCH

On 06-02-10 at about 0249 hours, the Chula Vista Police Department received a 911 call of two suspects who just broke a vehicle window in the 1000 block of Mountain Ash Avenue.  The reporting party said the vehicle alarm was sounding and the suspects were walking around the car.  After a short time they walked away and the reporting party updated dispatch with their direction of travel.

Several CVPD officers arrived and began searching the area for signs of a crime.  The first officer on scene noticed three vehicles with broken windows.  Another officer arrived on scene and noticed a vehicle with foggy windows.  The officer passed the vehicle and the driver started the car and tried make a u-turn and struck a parked car.  The vehicle completed the u-turn and fled on surface streets with its lights turned off.  The officer pursued the vehicle northbound toward Otay Lakes Road and Salt Creek Elementary school.

The driver of the suspect vehicle lost control of the vehicle near Salt Creek Elementary school and drove down an embankment into a nature preserve near the school.  Two male suspects fled into the nature preserve on foot and a female suspect was taken into custody in the back seat of the car.  Officers set a perimeter around the preserve and requested a canine officer from the National City Police Department to assist with the tracking and search for the two outstanding suspects.  At least two United States Border Patrol Agents also responded with night vision equipment to assist with the search.

The NCPD Canine unit tracked a scent through the heavy vegetation and rocky terrain of the creek bed.  At one point the canine tracked a scent to heavy brush but the NCPD officer could not see a suspect.  The NCPD canine tracked the scent and went into the brush where the suspect was hiding and ignoring commands from the officer.  The suspect sustained a canine bite and surrendered to the NCPD officer.

A short time later one of the assisting Border Patrol Agents tracked the second suspect through the vegetation and rough terrain.  The Border Patrol Agent located the second suspect and he surrendered to the Border Patrol Agent.

CVPD Officers recovered stolen property from the suspect vehicle and all three were charged with multiple vehicle burglaries.  The driver was also charged for felony evading and resisting arrest.  The male passenger was transported to the hospital and treated for bite injuries to his arm and charged with resisting arrest in addition to the charges related to the vehicle burglaries.

During the subsequent investigation, CVPD detectives learned that a fourth suspect may have been left near the scene as the pursuit started.  The fourth suspect is still outstanding and the investigation is ongoing.
